1949 North Carolina License Plate Pair 781-366 - Full Restoration
I offered this pair of 1949 NC plates on my NCplates website and they have found a new owner with a '49 Ford who wants them restored for the vehicle. I have to admit, these would have been perfect for my Rat Rod Restoration style plates as these have their share of pitting from surface rust. Follow along as I document the restoration.
Day 1- I have one plate blasted and pitted places filled and most of the front of the second plate blasted. A few small places of rust through on these plates but the filler will take care of that.
Day 2- Both plates are now blasted and am now working on filling the pitted areas from the surface rust. I finally have the first coat of primer on one plate in order to help find the pitted areas I missed.
Day 3- Both plates are primed with primer filler to fill in the rough pitting from the rusted areas.
Day 4- Final primer coat is applied and awaiting color.
Day 5- First coat of yellow base is applied. Second picture is showing off-white because of lighting.
Day 6- Got the yellow bases painted and applied the lettering. One plate ended with a crooked "A" in CAROLINA despite my attempt at straightening and filling the letter which was pitted from rust and it appears the dies for that letter might have moved when the plate was made as the upper part of the letter seems to go right a bit. Overall, the plates turned out great!
